April Skiing in Verbier – One of the Best Kept Secrets of the Season

Many people assume the ski season in Verbier is winding down by April.

In reality, some of the best skiing of the winter often happens after Easter, when the crowds disappear but the mountains are still very much alive.

For those who know how to ski spring conditions, April can be one of the most enjoyable times of the season.

Quiet Slopes and Empty Lifts

By the time the Easter holiday rush is over, the atmosphere in Verbier changes completely.

The busy February queues are gone.
The slopes feel spacious again.
And you can often ski straight onto lifts that were packed just a few weeks earlier.

This is when Verbier starts to feel like a local’s mountain again.

You can take your time, explore more terrain and enjoy long runs without constantly watching for traffic.

Fresh Snow and Big Blue Sky Days

April often surprises people.

Winter isn’t necessarily over. In fact, Verbier regularly receives fresh snowfall well into April thanks to its high altitude and extensive terrain above 2500 metres.

Last winter was a perfect example. On April 18th 2025, Verbier received over a metre of fresh snow in just 24 hours. The following morning the mountain looked like mid-January again — deep powder, quiet slopes and blue skies.

Days like that are a great reminder that spring skiing in Verbier can still deliver proper winter conditions.

Understanding Spring Snow

Spring skiing follows a slightly different rhythm compared to mid-winter.

The best skiing is usually earlier in the day, when the snow is still firm and supportive after the overnight freeze.

As the sun warms the slopes, the snow softens into what skiers love to call corn snow – smooth, forgiving and incredibly satisfying to ski.

By early afternoon, depending on the temperature and aspect of the slope, the snow can start to become heavier. That’s usually a good sign that it’s time to slow things down a little.

Long Mountain Lunches

April skiing naturally encourages a slightly different pace. Start early. Ski great snow. Then relax.

Verbier has no shortage of excellent mountain restaurants, many with sunny terraces and spectacular views across the Alps.

It’s one of the reasons many regular visitors quietly say that spring is their favourite time to ski.

There’s something very special about finishing a great morning of skiing and then sitting in the sunshine enjoying lunch while still surrounded by snow-covered mountains.

Off-Piste Adventures

April can still deliver some excellent off-piste skiing.

With the right conditions and good timing, the terrain around Mont Fort, Attelas and the Vallon d’Arbi can offer some fantastic spring runs.

Understanding snow conditions, timing and aspect becomes especially important at this time of year, which is where skiing with a qualified local instructor can really help you get the most from the mountain.

A Perfect Time to Improve Your Skiing

Spring conditions are also fantastic for developing skiing technique.

The slightly softer snow is more forgiving than mid-winter hardpack, which makes it an ideal time to work on:

  • carving technique

  • skiing steeper terrain

  • developing confidence off-piste

  • becoming more relaxed and fluid on skis

With quieter slopes and longer daylight hours, there’s simply more time and space to enjoy the mountain.

The Season Isn’t Over Yet

Verbier’s lift system normally runs well into late April, and every year there are days near the end of the season that feel like hidden gems.

Quiet lifts. Soft snow. Big mountain views.

And the feeling that you’ve discovered something that many skiers overlook.

For those of us who spend the entire winter here, April is often one of the most enjoyable months of the season.
